Our living garbage disposal

No, this post is not really about our garbage disposal but about our dog, Butters.

As a puppy Butters was a terror. A true nightmare for any new dog owner.  She disobeyed our commands, mocked me in obedience classes, bit us and when we would try to correct her she would come back and bite us harder the next time.

Out of all of those things and many others Butters would eat anything that was within 5 feet of her; left, right, up or down she considered it hers. It didn't matter if it was on the counter-she would jump up so her front paws were on the countertop and wolf it down. It didn't matter if it was in your hand or on your plate if you turned your head away from her it was gone in less than 3 seconds.

I have a few stories from her puppyhood days that I like to retell occasionally such as the Pizza Hut tale where she ate our entire breadstick order. And then when I was scolding her for it she burped it back in my face. There's also the time she ate 6-7 doughnuts off the counter that were still in the box; when I returned the box appeared as if it as untouched but the chocolate frosting that she had not had time to lick off the counter was still present. She almost got away with that one!

Butters is now 3 years old and while in some dogs that should be considered adulthood, of course in labs we aren't even out of the puppy stage yet!

Most recently while at my parents house for Thanksgiving weekend I was packing all of our things getting ready to head back home and decided to put away the kennel that Butters sleeps in during our stay. My mother is much kinder than we are to our dog and put an old robe down on the floor of the kennel for Butters to sleep on. (We have learned our lesson as Butters still rips any towel, blanket or doggie bed we buy her to sleep on and so she now gets the hard, cold metal floor of her kennel at home) She surprisingly had not ripped up the old robe but while I was pulling it out of the kennel something fell out onto the floor.  At first I didn't know what it was but upon further investigation I discovered it was the netting from the ham we had eaten for our Thanksgiving dinner!

I took it out to show Evan to ask her if he saw her eating it the day before to which he said: "Well, I thought I saw something hanging out of her mouth but when I went to reach for her and pry open her jaws there was nothing there." Well now we know what it was! First off, how she did not choke on it going down but secondly how did she not choke on it while it was coming back up in the middle of the night! This dog amazes me at times!

Yesterday we had some friends come over to visit who have a sweet girl, JoAnna, who is 18 months.  Now, JoAnna has a doggie at her house too but Butters is much bigger than Max and let's just say Butters was all up in JoAnna's business! Especially when Butters realized that this baby is the same size height wise as she which means all of Joanna's food soon became Butters food!  When the banana peel went missing, it was confirmed that Butters ate it. Well, swallowed it whole is more like it.

Thankfully, the banana peel so far has been easily digested and we have not had to clean up any messes. We love our dog but goodness gracious when is she going to grow up!

First haircut!

On Friday Liam got his first haircut! I was trying to wait as long as I could but honestly the rat tail in the back just wasn't that attractive.

                      Before:

                 During:

After: Working it for the camera!

This past weekend my whole family went to Atlanta, Georgia for my cousin Anna's wedding. This included lots of laughter, quality cousin time, and Liam's first plane ride.

Liam did really well on the plane to Atlanta. He ate his dinner which helped with the pressure in his ears, which he never complained about it. And then we watched a little bit of cousin Elliott's DVD that he said Liam could borrow. What a nice cousin!

While in Atlanta Liam was the belle of the ball. Everyone wanted to hold him and have him make his "funny face." Which is quite hilarious and of course once he realized that everyone was laughing at him for doing it he did it more, and more, and more.

During the wedding Liam was again quite good, even though mommy and daddy forgot to pack any books or toys that he could look at during the ceremony; the only time he made a peep was when mommy tried to give him a drink of water which he guzzled down and than started choking on. :)

The reception was even better! Loud music, cousins, aunts and Grandma dancing with him was lots of fun! Let's just say he slept all through the night and even past his usual wake up time.

Before getting back on the plane home we stopped at a puppet museum that Uncle Blair wanted to visit. We saw Big Bird, Kermit and lots of other puppets. Only I got scared in one of the puppet rooms when one of the puppets started moving without prompting. Liam loves puppets and especially liked it when his aunts put on a puppet show for him to watch.

While Liam did great on the plane, we are glad the trip is behind us.  And with all the bags we had to drag through the airport we may wait until Liam is a little older for our next airplane adventure.

Da-da

Liam has finally said "Da-da."  I don't know if it was even sweeter that he started saying it during the Packers game but now we have three words to his vocabulary.

Da-da is very happy!

Climb every mountain...

I was curious yesterday to see if Liam could climb the stairs. So, I put him on the first step and....YES! Of course he can go up stairs.

Liam actually went up the stairs very well for one of his first tries. He slipped a couple times but I (and Butters) was right there to make sure he didn't fall more than a step back down again.

Here are some pictures to document yet another milestone.
*Please ignore my robe-it is below 60 degrees outside which means my house feels like it is below 50.

This picture has nothing to do with climbing stairs                                                                                          but we were playing peek a boo, and I thought it was really cute

If you're happy and you know it...

CLAP YOUR HANDS!

Finally, Liam has a new skill that does not involve moving...well, moving out of a sit. Liam can now clap his hands and is quite pleased with himself over it too.

Liam likes to clap his hands when he throws the ball. Liam likes to clap his hands to music and Liam likes to clap his hands when Mommy sings him silly songs.

Liam also has started to dance. This is quite hilarious to watch as he first started doing it in his highchair during mealtimes. I think I mentioned how long it takes Liam to eat; so mommy and daddy play music so we don't go crazy.  Dancing includes bobbing your head and your legs at the same time so when he gets going he can almost move the chair! Yesterday while nursing Liam I turned the TV on so I wouldn't be bored. And an old Sex and the City episode was starting. For those of you who lived under a rock while that show was on it has a very distinctive theme song at the beginning of the show. I looked down to check on Liam-he looked back at me with that mischievous grin and....LET'S DANCE!

He started bobbing his head and rocking his whole body back and forth on my pillow smiling away like this was the best song he's ever heard. It was quite hilarious and I'm sure if someone had been looking in my window they would have seen an infant who looked like he was having seizures and his mother laughing at him with her boob hanging out. I like to keep it classy. :)

So, we'll keep dancing and I'll try to teach Liam some new moves-although I think he thinks he's already a pro.

Master Crawler...and anything else that involves movement

It's happening...the day I knew would come. Liam has become quite skilled at crawling. He can now crawl anywhere and everywhere...quickly.

Say goodbye to the days where I could set him on the floor to play with his toys while I rushed to the bathroom, or do the dishes, or fold the laundry. (I actually never did any of these things before anyway, well except use the bathroom, but now I can say that I can't get to it)

Liam has also become very talented at pulling himself to a stand...on anything. His toys, the chair, the couch, my legs, Butters, the TV stand, and the hamper. He also enjoys playing with electrical cords,  trying to unplug the computer has become a fun new game. I am so proud that he is gaining new skills every day, just some days I wish that they involved more sitting and less moving. :)

Liam is now 9 months old and is still in the 3rd percentile for weight. Coming in with a solid 15 pounds 6 ounces.  He is our little guy and while I think he's perfect the doctor wants us to try to fatten him up a bit. So, we have increased Liam's food intake and he is loving it. Toast loaded with butter has never gotten me excited but Liam giggles with delight when he sees us spreading those extra calories on. Dinner which used to include a veggie or two and some fruit now consists of meat, veggies, fruit, and of course toast. All with butter.

But wait, that's not all. He doesn't get just one serving of each, Liam gets as much as his little tummy desires. As long as he keeps opening his mouth we keep shoving in the food. This has resulted in mealtimes taking as long as an hour, and while we love interacting and playing with our little man watching someone eat for an hour gets a little boring. Mommy tends to get a little crazy and start singing Liam songs that I make up on the spot. I often am surprised at my creativeness but when I look towards my husband for approval at my wisdom I often get "the look."*
*please see earlier posts

Hopefully this getting fat thing works out, I just have to remember only Liam is supposed to be gaining pounds. Butters and I are still supposed to be on a diet.
