Don't get me wrong, Liam definitely throws little fits when he doesn't get his way. But last night....we had our first real temper tantrum.
I don't think Evan or I even really know what it was about. Although I think I have some ideas as to what brought it up....
When Liam and I come home from daycare/work he is ALWAYS hungry. He wants to eat right away, even though he has just had a snack at daycare an hour ago. If I ignore these requests (screaming), I can guarantee that the whole night will be a disaster. So, last night as I was trying to make meatballs for our dinner that night, I strategically placed his snack container next to me so I could keep giving him food as he requested.
Cue Daddy who comes home (5:10), everyone is happy and we all go upstairs to spend time together. Evan and Butters leave for their walk (its raining) and Liam and I watch Disney movie clips on YouTube until they get back.
Now I finally get to start making dinner, (6:00) which really isn't that late. I always tend to underestimate how much time it takes me to put dinner together so when I thought Spaghetti and Meatballs 15 minutes no problem, it turned into 30 minutes later.
Liam has come into the kitchen maybe 3 times since I started to make dinner, each time crying and showing his sign for "more." Dinner is now ready (6:30) and we tell Liam to go to his chair so we can eat. He has now decided that he is fed up with us. I mean really how many times do you have to ask to eat?
I won't go any further with details, because really who wants to hear details of an actual temper tantrum. It did include lots of screaming, crying and tears. Even when we were trying to feed him food at that point he was so mad at us he just pushed it away. We took him out of the highchair, he would want back in just so he could scream and push the fork away. I took him outside thinking some fresh air would snap him out of it. (which he did quiet down but as soon as we turned back towards the door, he would start screaming again)
20 minutes later when he had clearly worn himself out and his eyes were closed I shoved some squash into his mouth and for some reason he decided that he would stop screaming and just eat.
So it began with no explanation and ends with no explanation. Is that why they call it a tantrum? Can't wait for the next one!

Meet me in St. Louie, Louie
Last weekend we took a family trip to St. Louis. We had such an amazing time. Turns out when you actually plan your trip out including directions on how to get to each place, your vacation can be loads of fun!
We went to the zoo where Liam really liked the fish, the penguins, the hippos, lions, tigers and bears! (oh my!) We even got to hear two new words from Liam, fish and WOW!
After that we went to the art museum where Liam slept and Evan got inspired with Monet, Van Gogh and some other famous artists.
On day two we visited the City Museum which I don't think I can explain well enough. It was absolutely amazing and mind boggling!
Which resulted in the last picture of Liam completely exhausted, falling asleep in our arms, on the way back to the car. It was a lot of fun, but we're glad to be home.

Living on the edge
Today was an off day for Mommy. Here are my confessions:
This morning Liam was in the living room while I was getting breakfast ready in the kitchen. Liam happily talking to himself and then everything became quiet. I walked into the room to discover my son standing on top of his chair holding onto another larger chair, next to the fireplace.
This afternoon while playing at Ian's house, Liam started to play in the dog water dish. A common "no-no" at our house, but at Ian's house the dog bowl is a miniature swimming pool.
Later at our house while playing in his room, dying of the heat I decided to open the windows. Cue Liam who runs over to look out his window, starts slamming his hand against the screen and cuts his finger.
Not 10 minutes later Liam walks over to the box fan that I started (again due to the heat) and starts to try to stick his finger into the blades.
As I am writing this he has pulled most of Evan's CD's out of the flimsy Target bought storage "furniture" and climbed onto my crafts chest to look out the window.
Either I'm having an off day or Liam's curiosity has peaked.

Peek a Boo
Liam really likes playing Peek a Boo. He will play peek a boo anytime of the day.
Here's his new version of this fun game:

On Wednesday Liam and I went to the park that is 2 blocks away from our house. Here are some of my favorite pictures:

Self feeding
I like to think of myself as a laid back kind of mom. I try to give Liam space during "free play" so he can explore on his own and I like to think I don't hover over him when he's learning new things.
As Liam is now considered a toddler (although I still think he's my baby) I have tried to encourage him to feed himself during mealtimes. This works really well when he can just grab food with his fingers like toast, diced fruit or veggies. However, Liam has also started grabbing for the spoon when we are feeding him. Before, Evan or I would dodge around him so we could continue with mealtime as quickly as possible. Now we have come to the realization that he needs to figure this utensil thing out or he's going to be 10 and have a phobia of spoons.
A couple years ago my girlfriend was telling me how controlling she is as a mom. She was explaining that she hates it but she cannot make Christmas cookies with her children. Her children are now 7 and 12 but she still to this day can only make the dough, roll it out and than she will bring the kids in and let them cut out the shapes. She has to leave the room because she cannot help herself from pushing them out of the way because they are doing it all wrong. Her heartrate goes up and she begins to sweat.
I love my girlfriend but I promised myself that I would never be like that. Yet it appears that I am beginning to have some control issues myself. When Liam grabs for the spoon I have to tell myself "it's ok, calm down he needs to learn how to do this." My heartrate begins to increase, I hold my breath and try to be encouraging to my son. I begin to relax as the spoon heads toward his mouth and than it always, ALWAYS goes in his hair, on the floor or down his front.
I have got to calm down. After all what's the worse that could happen? Spaghetti-O's on the floor?Butters is happy. Oatmeal in his hair or face? It will wash off. Applesauce on the wallpaper? Oh well, Evan never liked it anyway.
